Lucian Bran – Promised Land
These photos bring to your attention a series of mural wallpapers from Romanian living-rooms, representing waterfalls, mountain views, lakes, forests. The nature landscape wallpaper used to be a very popular interior design piece in 80’s Romania.
It intrigued me because in my artistic practice I often investigate the border between reality and fiction, between essence and appearance. The grandiose imagery would enable the inhabitants of the house to escape into a fantasy world. I like to think of it as a sort of paradise “at hand”. This kitsch and yet monumental interior design became the object of reverie and contemplative optimism. The photos are constructed in such a way as to surprise the frame within a frame and the contrast between them.
More images and other interesting projects can be found on Lucian Bran’s website that I discovered via Diana Mese?an. Lucian Bran (1981) graduated National University of Arts Bucharest, Photography class in 2009. Currently he lives and works in Brasov and Bucharest, Romania.
