Dragos Rapeanu – Stan
“Among the things that have captivated me as a kid were: ‘Mondo Enduro’, ‘The Lonely Planet’ and the stories of Aitmatov. And what did they all have in common? They were all talking about magical faraway places ending in ‘-stan’ . Fast-forward almost 20 years, and there I was, riding my motorcycle through Kirgistan and Tadjikistan. So 3 weeks of riding, a bit more than 5000 km covered in two countries that impressed me with their remote places, stunning views and warmth of the people.
One day I was riding, I saw less than 10 cars on the road and passed through only one village. It was just a desert at about 4000m altitude, sub-zero temperatures and snow starting to fall.
On another day, one of the bikes broke down and we were in the middle of nowhere. We found a house close by – we didn’t know any Russian or Kirgiz, and the owners didn’t know any English. Yet somehow we all got along, and ended up staying with them for 2 days, until we fixed the bike.
And after three weeks of riding the only thing I could think was: I wish this would never end, I could this forever.” – Dragos Rapeanu
