Aga Luczakowska – Lost Highway
“More than 20 years after the fall of the Communism Romania has only around 200km of highways. According to the European Transport Safety Council, Romania has the highest traffic mortality rate in the EU per 1,000 people. The report indicates that Romanian roads are eight times more dangerous than their Swedish counterparts. In summer 2010 I moved from Poland to Romania. Most of my travels between Poland and Bucharest are by car. It takes about 24 hours to drive 1200 km from my home town in Poland to Bucharest. Half of the distance -600 km -from the Romanian border to Bucharest, takes about 16 hours. Twice as much time as driving through Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. As a photographer and a person traveling there and back I started to document my trips. What makes my trips difficult as a passenger makes them at the same time interesting for me as a photographer. The view out the window is unusual and much different than in other European Countries. Even at night I am passing cows walking on the street, stray dogs and people sitting outside their homes.”

This is so true! Great pictures!
But these look like backwater village foot-paths.
I mean: I know our roads suck but…why would you drive through these places to get out of the country?
Looks more like a detour.
This is only partly true, as the author appearantly documented some back-country gravel roads instead of the main E and DN roads. Needless to say, fatalities on these roads are far less greater than the ones on the main roads, since the road is so bad that everybody is forced to drive carefully.
Highways/Byways, who cares? It still makes an interesting read and spooky pictures.
A bit different from the traffic-choked little island I live on!
